text:
(1183). Saladin writes to [Pope Lucius III]. He has received the pope’s messages, delivered by Oliverus Vitalis, and agrees to an exchange of prisoners, but he maintains that the Christians in captivity are gentiles et nobiles viri, whereas the Muslims in captivity are rustici et minimi et vilissimi homines. He suggests that the standing of the prisoners held by either side be taken into account. He provides Oliverus with confidential messages for the pope.
