Mar. 1-31. Compiègne. Louis, the eldest son of King Philip of France, reminds King John of Jerusalem that in French law no one under the age of 21 can plead in court. He states on behalf of his father that if the daughters of comes Henricus [Henry of Champagne] wish to bring the countess of Troyes and Thibaut her son to court over the patrimonial lands, he will not hear any case until Thibaut is 21 years old, especially as he has evidence that Henricus left the land to Thibaut on his departure for Jerusalem; He also informs John of his desire that Erardus de Rameruco be forbidden to marry the daughter of comes Henricus. [298] On 11 December 1213 Innocent had assured Countess Blanche of Champagne and her son Thibaut that he would confirm the judgement of Cardinal Robert of Courçon that Comes Henricus had ensured that his land would pass to his brother Thibaut should he not return from the Holy Land and that his marriage to the queen of Jerusalem had been illegitimate, as had been her previous marriage to Conradus marchio Montisferrati, who had removed her from her legitimate husband Unfredus de Toron.
