text:
Mar. 5. Lateran. The archbishop of Nicosia has asked for the pope’s decisions on two issues. First, B. filius domini Beritinsis has secretly married E., the daughter of the late G. de Monte Beliardo and the widow of G. de Monte Acuto, in spite of [a general ruling, including the threat] of excommunication made by Cardinal Pelagius of Albano, the papal legate, because they are within the prohibited degrees of consanguinity. They have caused scandal, have ignored their excommunication in the expectation of a papal dispensation and have forced the archbishop to flee from Cyprus to Acre. Secondly, some Greek [Greci] monks, have denied the efficacy of the Latin Eucharist on the grounds that the sacrament can only be performed with leavened bread, and have publicly proclaimed other errors. They have been imprisoned but refuse to recant unless authorized to do so by their own patriarch. Pope Gregory IX orders the archbishop to proclaim the excommunication of the couple publicly, invoking against them the secular arm if need be, and to proceed against the Greek monks for heresy.
