Mar. 9. Lateran. Hearing that through greed many lords in the kingdom of Jerusalem forbid their slaves and other Sarraceni to hear sermons or receive baptism, Pope Gregory IX orders the patriarch of Jerusalem, the papal legate, and his suffragans to compel the lords to allow their slaves hear sermons at least once a month and on the great feasts and to receive baptism, although they will remain in servitude.
