Jan. 18. Ugo Dei gratia princeps Joppe makes an eleemosynary grant with the intention, among other things, of seeking divine help in the conquest of Ascalon. With the agreement of his wife Emma and his barones, he gives the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem, represented by domnus Raimundus magister Hospitalis et custos et gubernator pauperum, one of the 3 better casalia in the territory and lordship of Ascalon once the city falls into his hands. He also gives, to be held free of any consuetudo, the land in Jaffa that Radulfus Hospitalis held before he died. He confirms all that the Hospital holds in the territory and lordship [dominium] of Ramla. Witnesses: Julduinus abbas S. Marie Valle Josaphat; Barisanus Joppe constabularius, by whose advice the casale was given; Willelmus Tiberiadis; Gualterius Birutensis; Guido frater ejus; Eustacius Garnerius; Gualterius frater ejus; Goffridus de Flavi; Girardus de Area; Hugo Ramatensis; Roardus Hierusalem; Goffridus de Parente; Guido de Miliaco; of the brothers of the Hospital, Petrus Raimundus sacerdos; Rainerius Tiberyadis; Petrus Tiberyadis; Willelmus Joppe; Petrus Malet; Durandus, Hospitalis constabularius. In addition and with the agreement of his wife Emma, Ugo gives the Hospital freedom throughout all his land, held now or in the future, from all rent [census] and dues [usus et consuetudines], including those on weights and measures [modii et bucce portus].
