[361] frater Hermannus magister militie Templi writes to Domnus Galtherus de Avesnis, informing him that warfare has broken out between the rulers of Egypt, Hamah, Damascus, Aleppo and Novum Ychonium, which is 5 days beyond Baghdad. Martinus, the grandson of the sultan of Damascus, has apostasised. One of the sultans, who cannot be mentioned, has on hearing of the approach of the crusade received baptism and has promised to subject his land to the Christians.
