January 16. Lyons. Pope Innocent IV writes to the master and brothers of the Teutonic Order of Jerusalem, relating that they explained before the pope that after their former [Grand] Master Gerhard [von Malberg] resigned in their castle of Montfort, leaving the authentic and perpetual seal of the master on the altar, as is customary, and went from their house to the house of the Templars, he rashly had a new seal made, and the addressees fear lest he should oblige them in any debts. The pope grants that they shall not be held responsible concerning any debts of the former master after his resignation, especially since the new master gave the former master 400 silver marks at the Apostolic See to pay his debts.
