August 20. Lyons. Inclined by the prayers of the bishop-elect of Bethlehem G[ottifredo] dei Prefetti, Pope Innocent IV writes to the patriarch of Jerusalem and papal legate (Robert de Nantes) and the bishop of Acre (Gauthier de Provins), ordering them, when requested by the bishop-elect’s agent, to be present when a series of holy objects mortgaged for 1,500 besants by some Bethlehemian canons, [which have been redeemed], are deposited in his name and that of his church in the house of the Templars or the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem in Acre, wherever the agent thinks best, granting to the agent their letters attesting to the deposit. According to the bishop-elect’s testimony, the mortgaged sanctuaria include a nail and a hammer used during the Lord’s Passion as well as a hand of the Apostle Thomas.
