September 18. Lyons. Pope Innocent IV writes to Master Giovanni da Vercillo, the chaplain of the patriarch of Antioch [Alberto Roberti], relating that Giovanni explained to him that when the patriarch was legate in those parts [Outremer] he conferred on Giovanni the vacant chantry of the church of Tortosa (Tartus), but afterwards the bishop and chapter of Tortosa attempted to confer it on Canon Richard of the same church. The pope accepts the patriarch’s action and, supplying any defect, no statute withstanding, confirms Giovanni’s possession of the chantry with its appurtenances as was held by his predecessor the late Michael, declaring null and void anything done against this collation.
