July 23. Lyons. Pope Innocent IV writes to Archbishop [Eustorge] of Nicosia, relating that the archbishop informed the pope that several Greek monks of some Greek monasteries in his jurisdiction, seduced by the Devil, refuse or receive unwillingly and overturn the Church’s commands, contrary to their monastic calling, which they disgrace. They also welcome and support other Greeks damned with heresy, are involved in sedition in other ways, and commit horrible crimes. The pope wishes to reinforce the archbishop’s own authority to correct these abuses and reform these monasteries, removing vices and planting virtues, notwithstanding appeals intended to delay discipline.
