June 24. Lyons. Pope Innocent IV writes to the prior of the Holy Trinity of London of the Order of St. Augustine, relating that he was informed on behalf of the bishop-elect of Bethlehem [Gottifredo dei Prefetti] that several questors of the church of Bethlehem collect alms in his name, but they not only fail to turn them over to him, but they even apply them to their own uses, to his and his church’s prejudice. The pope orders the addressee to force with ecclesiastical censure those who keep the alms collected for that church and fail to turn them over to the bishop-elect or his nuncio to restore them, and to force those who dare to take away the goods of that church violently or otherwise keep them illicitly or rashly impede its nuncios sent to England to collect alms to stop this, first warning them, without appeal.
