July 1. Lyons. Pope Innocent IV writes to the master and brothers of the Hospital of Jerusalem, relating that he was asked on their behalf to provide for them, since they wear closed (clausis) capes over their weapons, which rather hinders their hands and arms, making it easier for their enemies to attack them and depriving them of freedom [of movement] to defend themselves. The pope allows them to wear loose overcoats when they happen to be in or cross through unsafe places, by wearing the sign of the cross on them over their chests (supertunicalibus largis uti, gerendo super eis in pectore signum crucis).
