March 18. Lyons. Pope Innocent IV writes to the Commune of Marseille (Massiliense), relating that he has great affection for them because of their past and future services. They informed him that at one time the consuls of Marseille (Massilienses) in Acre asked the late Iohannes the tenth king of Jerusalem (Ierosolimitanus) for an account concerning the liberty and the street (ruga) granted to them by the king’s predecessors, the kings of Jerusalem. Eventually, after insistence from the consuls, when the king was assured by trustworthy people that the liberty and street were granted to the Commune of Marseille (Massiliense) by his predecessors, he confirmed them with the consent of wife, the late Maria (of Montferrat), as is more fully contained in the privilege made for this. Inclined by their entreaties, despite the incongruous Latin, the pope confirms and strengthens the privilege, inserting it verbatim.
