March 18. Lyons. Pope Innocent IV writes to the Commune of Marseille (Massiliense), relating that he has great affection for them because of their past and future services. They informed him that, for the services that the commune of Marseille (Massiliense) provided them in the siege of Acre, the late Guy (Guido) the eighth king of Jerusalem and his wife Sybilla (Sibilla) granted to some citizens of Marseille (Massilienses) in their presence, in the name of the commune, the freedom to enter and leave the Kingdom of Jerusalem on land and sea, of staying there and doing business without any exaction, and of making, refitting, destroying, and hiring ships of Marseille (Massilia), and the free power of having a court (curia), viscounts, and consuls in Acre, with certain conditions, as is more fully contained in the privilege done for this. Inclined by their entreaties, the pope confirms and strengthens the privilege, which he inserts verbatim.
