Between 8 February (Battle of Mansurah) and 6 April (capture of King Louis). (Matthew Paris presents this letter partly in summary form and partly verbatim.) King Louis advanced on Cairo. The letter speaks of Robert of Artois’ (Robertus Atrabatensis) impetuous attack on Mansurah, his quarrel with the master of the Templars before the attack and William (Willelmus) Longa-spata’s attempt to mediate. Aware of divisions in the Christian camp the sultan counterattacks and both are killed along with Robertus de Vere.
