. December 21. Naples. Pope Alexander IV writes to the abbot and convent of the Blessed Virgin Mary of the Valley of Josaphat of the Order of St Benedict, belonging directly to the Roman Church, in the diocese of Jerusalem, relating that it was proposed to him on their behalf that at one time the imminent madness of the pagans and other evil-doers forced them to desert their monastery and to transfer to another place in order avoid danger to their persons, without having been granted the liberty to do so by the papacy. The pope responds to their requests by restoring them and their monastery to their original freedom, allowing them to ask and receive from the Apostolic See confirmation for their abbot, which the pope reserves for that see, and to enjoy freely the exemption and other privileges with the liberties granted to the monastery.
