. 1254 (?). Nicosia. Archbishop [Hugo (?)] (Ugo da Fagiano) of Nicosia decrees that an assized who fails in an assigned task shall be fined three denarii each time. An assized who is assigned and is absent from Matins, high Mass, or Vespers on a day of nine readings shall pay the same penalty. An assized who is absent from Matins, high Mass, or Vespers on common days shall be fined two denarii, and the same for each minor hour after the first time. The person who notes the absence shall receive half and the one who makes good the absence the other half. No one shall enter the choir when the epistle of high Mass has been read, and no member of the choir one shall be near the church or enter it with his secular habit while there is singing in the choir. Those who solely enter the choir to receive something given there should not be allowed in. An assize who failed to attend shall offer an excuse on that day or at least the next, if he has a legitimate one; otherwise he shall not be heard about this.
