December 7. Lateran. Pope Alexander IV writes to the archbishops, bishops, abbots, priors, deans, provosts, and other prelates and all chapters and convents of the churches and monasteries, both exempt and not, in the patriarchate of Jerusalem, informing them – after a long arenga about the importance of their province – that he has committed the office of full legation in the province of Jerusalem and over the Christian army for the Holy Land wherever it is in that province to Patriarch [Jacques Pantaléon] of Jerusalem. The pope orders the addressees to receive devoutly, treat honourably, faithfully assist, and humbly accept and obey the healthy mandates of the legate, for he will have observed the sentences that the legate promulgates against rebels, without appeal. But if it happens that another papal legate a latere is sent to those parts, while he is there the patriarch shall not occupy the office of legate, out of reverence for the Apostolic See.
