December 9. Lateran. Pope Alexander IV writes to Patriarch [Jacques Pantaléon], papal legate, relating that the patriarch told him that the late Pope I[nnocentius IV] granted the master and brothers of the knighthood of the Temple and the present pope also granted to the master and brothers of the Hospital of Jerusalem that everywhere outside the Kingdom of Germany the Templars could receive up to 10,000 silver marks and the Hospitallers up to 2,000 silver marks from redemptions of crusading vows in aid of the Holy land and from bequests of the faithful for aid to the Holy Land when specific places and persons are not expressed, granting them certain conservators for this. On the pretext of this indulgence, the Templars started to receive these redemptions and bequests in the Kingdom of Jerusalem while the see of Jerusalem was vacant, and the patriarch fears, as he says, that the Hospitallers want to do the same, to the patriarch's prejudice and trouble. The patriarch asserts that his predecessors were long accustomed to receiving these redemptions and bequests in the kingdom when there was no papal legate a latere in those parts. Thus the pope responds to the patriarch's requests by granting that no such indulgence granted or to be granted will generate any prejudice for the patriarch regarding receiving such redemptions and bequests in the kingdom, unless it makes full and express mention of the present indulgence, rather the patriarch shall receive them as his predecessors did until now.
