May 7. Lateran. Pope Alexander IV writes to Bishop Paulus of Paphos (Paphensis), relating that the bishop’s petition claimed that, while eight is the number of canons established in the church of Paphos, for some time some of the canons of that church were refusing to reside there personally, although they were receiving the entire incomes of their prebends in that church. Since his church was thereby defrauded and still is today when said canons are absent from the church, the bishop asked the pope to provide a solution. The pope concedes to the bishop that, after he warns the canons diligently, if within a year after the warning they do not return to said church to serve in person as they are obliged, he is no longer obliged – by papal letters obtained or to be obtained – to pay them the fruits of their prebends, nor can the bishop be forced to do so, unless the papal letters make explicit mention of this letter.
