Comments:
[5] Mayer (UKJ 1:117-18 and in Bistümer, pp. 258-87) has argued at length against any endowment by Godfrey and the establishment by him of a Benedictine community in the Valley of Jehoshaphat. There are reasons – particularly Patriarch Arnulf’s charter of Apr. 6 – Dec. 24 1112 – for questioning the foundation of the Benedictine abbey at such an early date, but the prestigious nature of the shrine and the burial of Garnier of Grez in late July in valle Iosaphat, in porticu basilice sancte Marie virginis et matris Iesu Christi (Albert of Aachen, p. 516) suggests that there was some monastic presence on the site during Godfrey’s lifetime. See Pringle, The Churches 3:288-9.
