text:
Feb. 15. Benevento. Pope Alexander III writes to P. prior sancti Sepulcri and the canons. P. and G. their brothers have told him that Patriarch Amalric of Jerusalem has exceeded his powers in intervening in the canons’ affairs. He has ordered the patriarch to allow the election by the community of any suitable and honest man to a canonry and he has forbidden him to impose canons on the community or dispose of prebends without its agreement, especially as there is a clear distinction between the endowments of the patriarchate and the canons.
