Comments:
[201] The judgement, surviving only in inventories of the 16th and 18th centuries, has attracted some discussion. See for example Hiestand, PTJ 2 :295; Hamilton, The Latin Church, p. 81; Kedar, ‘The Patriarch Eracles’, p. 181; Edbury and Rowe, William of Tyre, p. 22 n. 33. So many questions arise that I am inclined to believe that it is, at least, very corrupted. William of Tyre probably died in 1184. The Hospitallers did not acquire Margat until – at the very earliest - late 1186. Why was a judgement relating to a diocese in the patriarchate of Antioch decided by judge delegates from the patriarchate of Jerusalem, in the presence of the patriarch of Jerusalem and dated by the regnal year of the king of Jerusalem?
