July 23. Lyons. Pope Innocent IV writes to the [Roman] cleric Diodato dei Prefetti, nephew of the bishop-elect of Bethlehem [Gottifredo dei Prefetti], relating that on special papal mandate Master Jourdain [de Caurel], papal subdeacon and notary, granted him the then vacant archdeaconate of Ascalon, which is also called of Bethlehem, along with all rights and appurtenances, notwithstanding that it is usually granted to regular persons, as the chapter of Bethlehem and some others are said to claim, and the Jourdain invested Master Berardo di l’Aquila (Forcone) with it in the addressee’s name. Answering his request, the pope confirms the grant because of the addressee’s and his family’s devotion to the Apostolic See.
