Pope Innocent III rebukes the patriarch of Antioch for following the example of his predecessor, who had translated the archbishop of Mamistra [Mamistanum] to the archbishopric of Tarsus [Tharsenensis]. The patriarch had translated La[uranetius], the archbishop-elect of Apamea, previously confirmed as bishop of Valenia, to the diocese of Tripoli. Stressing the rights of the papacy in such matters, Innocent quashes the translation, also revokes the translation to Tarsus and suspends the right of the patriarch to confirm the appointment of bishops. text: Probably Mar. 18 - Apr. 8. Lateran. Pope Innocent III writes to the magister and brothers of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem. A case has been heard in Rome relating to complaints brought by Seguinus prior sancti Michaelis and Aimericus canonicus Tripolitanus, emissaries of the church of Tripoli. Pope Celestine III had written to the patriarch of Jerusalem, ordering the archbishop of Nazareth and the abbas of the Mt of Olives to put the Hospitallers in possession of church of Nephin, its tithes and 3 casalia. Innocent reverses that judgement in favour of the church of Tripoli. He has ordered the archbishop of Tyre and the bishop of Sidon to execute his judgement. Probably Mar. 18 - Apr. 8. Lateran. text: *Spring. Letters despatched to Rome wrongly report a German triumph in the Holy Land. They are followed by others that inform the pope that when the German [crusaders] reached Acre, they recovered the castle at Beirut, which was undefended. The Sarraceni had attacked and taken Jaffa, killing thousands of Christians. The Germans, hearing rumours of the death of the western emperor, reembarked, leaving the Christian settlers in peril from the Sarraceni. text: Dec. 23. Lateran. Pope Innocent III rebukes the patriarch of Jerusalem for slandering the archbishop of Tyre, who had sailed to Cyprus without the patriarch’s licence. The pope has learnt from letters that the archbishop had sailed to Cyprus to preside at the marriage of King Aimery and the queen of Jerusalem, on the advice of nearly all the Christian army. The patriarch, on the other hand, had condemned the marriage on the grounds of consanguinity, but, then, changing his mind, had crowned the couple king and queen. The pope wishes to be better informed of the circumstances and threatens the patriarch with sanctions. Dec. 23. Lateran.
