Pope Innocent III writes to the canons of the church of Bethlehem in relation to a disputed election to the bishopric, between R. subdiaconus (of Bethlehem) [268] and P. canonicus sepulcri domini. The case had already been heard in Rome, but has not been resolved. Meanwhile the pope condemns V. canonicus Bethlehemitanus, who had accepted a bribe of 500 Saracen besants for his vote in the election, for simony and deprives him of office. (c. 1200). He gives them a casale in Cyprus called Pendache with its villani and other dependencies, freed from all servitium. He excludes the fons Sancti Georgii with 10 carrucatae around it, which he had already given to the Hospital of St Mary of the Germans, and the gifts that he and his brother King Guy had donated to their homines. Witnesses: Aymericus de Rivet senescalcus Cypri; Rainerius Bibliot[ensis]; Rainaldus Suess[ionensis]; Rustanus Aymar; Raynaldus de Balma; Guillelmus de Balma frater ejus; Symon Paphensis; Balduinus Usseri[us]. The prior and canons of the Holy Sepulchre have informed Pope Innocent III in person that when Cardinal S. of St Praxedis could not be induced to accept his election as patriarch of Jerusalem, they chose Bishop Albert of Vercelli as patriarch, insisting on their sole right as electors following the nomination of two candidates. King Aimery and the bishops have assented. The pope encourages Albert, who is in Lombardy, to agree to his election, in spite of the difficulties evident in the process. c. Feb. 17. Rome. St Peter’s.
