Pope Paschal II confirms for Hvgo abbas and the abbey of St Mary of the Valley of Jehoshaphat all the gifts made by Godfrey [dux] and Baldwin [Ierosolimitanus rex] and others, and whatever the abbey will receive through the concessions of pontiffs, the liberality of princes and the oblations of the faithful. It will pay no tithes on the products of its own labour. It is free of episcopal procurations in Jerusalem. It can enjoy revenues from infidel peasants [rustici infideles]. Anyone can be buried in its cemetery. It can receive alms on behalf of those who die. It can enjoy parochial rights in its parishes. It can have relations with excommunicates. Willelmus prior sancti Sepulcri, in the presence and with the approval of Patriarch Stephen and with the agreement of his entire chapter, seals an agreement with St Mary of the Valley of Jehosaphat, represented by Gelduinus abbas. He surrenders an oven in that part of Jerusalem called the Iudearia to St Mary, renouncing all disputes over it. He remits the tithe owed on land called Plata petra, by the road that leads to the river. He grants the tithe of a casale called Darchiboam. He renounces all other claims made against St Mary. text: Dec. 25 1169 - Dec. 24 1170. Amalricus Sidoniensis episcopus describes how on a visit to Jerusalem he went to the tomb of the Blessed Virgin Mary and then to the cloister of the abbey of St Mary of the Valley of Jehoshaphat to see the abbot and brothers. Petrus abbas admitted him and his canons into an association of prayer, so that he should be remembered during his life, his anniversary of his death inscribed in the abbey’s obit book and his Requiem said both at Sidon and in St Mary. In return Amalricus remits under seal half the tithes owed by St Mary of the Valley of Jehoshaphat in his diocese.
