Pope Innocent IV writes to the [Roman] cleric Diodato dei Prefetti, nephew of the bishop-elect of Bethlehem [Gottifredo dei Prefetti], relating that on special papal mandate Master Jourdain [de Caurel], papal subdeacon and notary, granted him the then vacant archdeaconate of Ascalon, which is also called of Bethlehem, along with all rights and appurtenances, notwithstanding that it is usually granted to regular persons, as the chapter of Bethlehem and some others are said to claim, and the Jourdain invested Master Berardo di l’Aquila (Forcone) with it in the addressee’s name. Answering his request, the pope confirms the grant because of the addressee’s and his family’s devotion to the Apostolic See. July 23. Lyons. Pope Innocent IV writes to the archdeacon of Antioch and canons of Antioch, Pierre of Angoulême and Master Gerard, ordering to have the archbishop-elect of Caesarea paid up to one hundred silver marks annually, including the incomes of his archbishopric and the prebend he has in the church of Antioch, using money from some monasteries in the church and diocese of Acre, for as long as it pleases the pope, notwithstanding if those monasteries are overburdened with papal provisions or any indulgences to the contrary. Pope Innocent IV writes to Archbishop [Eustorge] of Nicosia, relating that the archbishop informed the pope that several Greek monks of some Greek monasteries in his jurisdiction, seduced by the Devil, refuse or receive unwillingly and overturn the Church’s commands, contrary to their monastic calling, which they disgrace. They also welcome and support other Greeks damned with heresy, are involved in sedition in other ways, and commit horrible crimes. The pope wishes to reinforce the archbishop’s own authority to correct these abuses and reform these monasteries, removing vices and planting virtues, notwithstanding appeals intended to delay discipline. Pope Innocent IV writes to the Greek patriarch of Antioch [Simeon II] and his suffragans, announcing the legation in their region of Brother Lawrence [of Portugal] of the Friars Minor (Franciscans), papal penitentiary, a mission justified by the full power that Christ conceded to the Holy See. The pope orders the addressees to welcome and treat the legate properly and to obey his commands, otherwise the pope will back up the just sentences the legate promulgates against rebels.
