text: June 1 – 30. Acre. Egidius, archbishop of Tyre, announces that Thomas Cordarius in the presence of William of Chastel Neuf (Guillermus de Castronovo), the Hospitaller master, has sold the archbishop a house that he holds from the Order in the street of the English for an annual rent of 2 Saracen besants payable on the feast of St Martin in November for 400 besants so that he can build a hospital for the poor. Since Johannes Brisebacin, in the presence of the master, shall have sold another house situated in the same street which he held from the Hospitallers for a rent of 3 Saracen besants, payable on the same day, we wish that whoever holds these houses shall in future pay the same rent, totalling 5 besants, plus and addition 3 besants. Should the occupants wish to sell, the Hospitallers have a right to pre-emption. The houses can be sold to anyone except that they are not to be sold to men of religion, clerics, knights, servants or the men of any of the communes. If the houses are damaged by earthquake, fire, water or in any other manner, the Hospitallers are not obliged to remit the rent. The houses are adjacent and are bounded on the east by the common road, on the west by the sea, on the south next to the house of Joannes Brisebacin is the house of the late Paumerius and to the north of the house of Thomas Cordarius is a certain house belonging to the Hospitallers. The archbishop seals this document with his lead seal.

text: July 12. Anagni. Pope Alexander IV writes to the prior of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem and the people's pastor (plebanus) of St Mark in Acre, relating that, at the request of the commune of Genoa, it is said that the pope sent a letter to the abbot and convent of St Sabbas in Acre ordering them to sell, grant perpetually for an annual rent, or give by trade to the commune their house in Acre (Acconensis) on the Street (vico) of the Chain next to the commune's house, granting the commune an executor for this. But because the pope has learned that such a sale or alienation would be at great cost for the monastery and cause much scandal, the pope orders the addressees, if it is so, to prohibit the executor from carrying out the papal mandate on this. If they (sic) proceed after the addressees' prohibition, the latter are to declare the process null and void. If the mandate has already been carried out, unless the parties renounce it before a deadline, the addressees are to revoke it on papal authority.

Following mediation by good men, Hugh, archbishop of Nicosia (Hugo Nicosiensis archiepiscopus), on behalf of his church, and Brother William of Chastel Neuf (frater Guillelmus de Castro Novo) magister sancte domus Hospitalis sancti Iohannis Ierlimitani and his convent reach an agreement, under both their seals, on the tithes owed by the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem for its lands in the city and diocese of Nicosia, and on certain other issues that have arisen between them. In return the archbishop and church of Nicosia will allow the bodies of the dead to be brought to the cemetery and church of the Hospital of St John in Nicosia and to be buried there. text: August 28. Anagni. Pope Alexander IV writes to Archbishop [Hugo] of Nicosia (Nicosiensis) and Bishop [Stephanus] of Famagusta (Famagustanus), relating that in his presence, on behalf of Queen Placentia of Cyprus, widow of the late King Henry, he was told that she had de facto contracted a marriage, or rather damnable concubinage, with the noble man Balianus son of Johannes lord of Arsur, who was related to her husband the king in the third degree of consanguinity, not without loss to her own spiritual health and the scandal of many people. Afterwards, however, with the advantage of time, wracked by remorse, she ceased living with Balianus, for the salvation of her soul. Nevertheless B[alianus], on the pretext of this concubinage and a certain papal dispensation that came to the queen’s attention after she had ceased this cohabitation, greedily seized her goods and those of her son the noble Hugo, orphaned [of his father], much to her and the orphan's detriment. So she asked the pope to deal with the matter with apostolic care. Since it is the pope’s duty to protect widows and orphans especially, the pope orders the archbishop and bishop, themselves or one of them, by themselves of through others, if it is so, to condemn the marriage, or rather concubinage, judging it to be and to have been nothing at all, declaring invalid anything stemming from it, using ecclesiastical censure against those who go against his ruling, notwithstanding any dispensation obtained that is said to have come to the queen’s attention after she ceased her cohabitation with Balianus, or any papal exemption or constitution of the General Council. The archbishop and bishop are to carry out this order quickly and effectively, so they can be commended for their diligence rather than upbraided for their negligence.
