text: October 23. Viterbo. Pope Alexander IV writes to the bishops of Acre (Acconensis) and Fiesole (Fesulanus) , relating that Jacob (sic) Giberti, citizen and merchant of Florence, informed him that he, in his name and in the name of Raynerius, Ballindoto, Calcanius, Bonacursus, and Bene de Cetera, and of his other associates, citizens and merchants of Florence, lent 6,000 gold Saracen besants of Acre (Accon) at the weight Acconense to Bishop [Opizo da San Vitale] of Tripoli while he was at the Apostolic See, for his and his church’s business, to be repaid at a certain time and place, as contained in a public instrument. If the bishop or his successors do not repay as required, the addressees, or one of them, themselves or via another or others, are to excommunicate the bishop or his successors and announce the excommunication each Sunday and feast day, with bells ringing and candles lit, having the announcement made in all other fitting places and having all others avoid them, as long as the debt and just and moderate expenses incurred remain unpaid. If the bishop or his successors remain under this sentence for two months, the addressees are to suspend them from the administration of the spiritual and temporal affairs of their church, giving the bishop or his successors a deadline to appear in person before the pope to accept their just punishment. With the consent of Patriarch James of Jerusalem, the papal legate, Terricus abbas and the convent of the church of Mt Sion rent under seal houses in Acre, with upper storeys (cum solo), plateae and outbuildings, to frater Anno magister and the convent of the Hospital of St Mary of the Germans in Acre for an annual rent of 309 Saracen besants in Acre weight, payable in 3 instalments of 103 besants in February, June and October. The houses are located as follows. To the east are the royal way and a house of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem, which once belonged to Mt Tabor and is adjacent to them. To the west is the house of the magister and convent of the Hospital of St Mary. To the north is the royal way and to the south is the barbican of the brothers of the Hospital of St Mary. Mt Sion also rents another little house. To the east and south is the royal way. Pope Alexander IV writes to all the Christian faithful, relating that the master and brothers of the house of the Lepers of St Lazarus of Jerusalem in Acre explained to him in a petition that they have begun to repair their hospital, which is quite old, with an expensive work, but the completion of this work exceeds their means. The pope invites the faithful of Christ to give alms and other charity for this purpose, offering donors an indulgence of 100 days, valid for five years. November 22. Viterbo. Pope Alexander IV writes to the master and brothers of the knighthood of the Lepers of St Lazarus of Jerusalem, wishing to lighten the suffering of their miserable condition. The pope has decided to allow them to receive up to 200 silver marks from money gained via usury, robbery, or other evil ways – as long as the those to whom the money must be restored cannot be found at all – and from earlier redemptions of crusading vows done on the authority of diocesans, except for that of Jerusalem, if they have not received a similar grace from the pope. If they leave, return, or give any of the 200 marks to those from whom they have received it, that returned money cannot serve for their liberation and they are not at all absolved with respect to that. Pope Alexander IV writes to Hugo (Hugues de Nissun), administrator of the church of Sebaste (Sebastiensis), papal chaplain, relating that he was shown the administrator’s petition asserting that Patriarch [Jacques Pantaléon] of Jerusalem, considering the administrator’s devotion to him and the church of Jerusalem and its members, with the consent of the prior and chapter of the church of Jerusalem, made Hugo prior of the then vacant priory of La Vigneraie (Vignareia) in the diocese Limoges (Lemovicensis), which belongs to the church of Jerusalem, and also committed to Hugo the administration of all churches and priories belonging to the church of Jerusalem in the Kingdom of France.
