To prevent the loss of the castles [castra] of Archas and Gibelacar, which have been destroyed by an earthquake, Amalric, dei gratia Ierosolimorum rex Latinorum quintus, Tripolitanum comitatum procurans, records under seal that he has given them to the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem and Gibertus venerabilis magister. The Hospitallers will restore them. Their possession of the castles, together with the servicia and hominium owed by homines in their domains, is guaranteed in the future. He gives the Hospitallers the right to enjoy the spoils of war gained from the Saraceni without any subtraction, unless he himself is present on campaign. If the count of Tripoli [Raymond III], who is a prisoner, should dispute these grants King Amalric will defend the Hospitallers. If the count is released from captivity King Amalric will ask him to confirm the gift. If he does not and the county reverts by hereditary right to the king, the grants will be confirmed and renewed. Amalric confirms all gifts previously made to the Order by the count and his predecessors. text: Feb. 4. Jerusalem. Amalric, per dei gratiam in sancta civitate Ierusalem Latinorum rex quintus, makes a sealed eleemosynary grant to the leprosary of St Lazarus of Jerusalem and its sick. He confirms a rent of 72 besants, taken from the royal revenues from David Gate and payable in 4 instalments of 18 besants each at Easter, the Nativity of St John the Baptist, Michaelmas and Christmas. The rent is made up in the following way. The king has given 50 of these besants for the maintenance of one leper in perpetuity. Added to this is a rent of 10 besants, drawn from the money fief [assisia] attached to the pincernatus, which was given by Odo de Sancto Amando, and a rent of 12 besants was given by the king in exchange for a house next to the macellum in Jerusalem, which the brothers of St Lazarus surrendered to him. comments: [126] The assise, prompted by a debate that followed the death of Henri le Buffle [Henricus Bubalus] leaving 3 daughters, was apparently decided on the advice on usage in France given by Count Stephen of Sancerre, named Stephen of Blois by Philip of Novara – understandably, since he was of the family of the counts of Champagne and Blois. Although the evidence for Stephen’s contribution dates from almost a century later, his word would have carried weight, first because he was offered the hand of Sibylla of Jerusalem by King Amalric and secondly because he brought to the East part of the proceeds of a tax imposed by King Louis VII of France for the needs of the Holy Land. He reached Palestine shortly before King Amalric came back from a visit to Constantinople in the late summer of 1171. He stayed for only a few months. William of Tyre, p. 947. He gives a rent [assisia] of 400 Saracen besants a year, to be drawn from the funda in Nablus and payable in 4 instalments, each of 100 besants. He gives 2 casalia in the region of Hebron called Deldol and Seriie and 2 casalia in the region of Bethan called Rehap and Ardelle, with their villani and sugar cane plantations [canamelli]. He also grants 1 robba of wheat and 1 robba of barley, to be taken every year from the rustici on every carruca he possesses in the territories of Jerusalem and Nablus. If these cannot be provided, whatever is lacking should be made up from his other goods, in or outside Nablus and from the funda of Acre.
