text: Aug. 5, Lateran. Pope Celestine III appoints the archbishop of Nazareth and the bishop of Bethlehem judges delegate in a dispute between the archbishop of Tyre and the plebanus of the [Venetian] church of St Mark in Tyre over that church’s parochial rights in the Venetian third part of Tyre. These had been confirmed for the time being, while the Holy Land was not recovered, by Pope Clement III, who had authorized the archbishops of Caesarea and Nazareth and the prior of the Holy Sepulchre to settle the matter. The rights of the church of St Mark were still being challenged by the archbishop of Tyre. Aug. 5, Lateran. text: Dec 13. Lateran. Pope Celestine III takes Alanus Nicosiensis archiepiscopus and the church of Cyprus under papal protection. He confirms the possessions of the church of Nicosia, specifying: the place in Nicosia where the church is situated; the 2 casalia of Ornithia and Ascendia, given by King Aimery of Cyprus; the tithes of Nicosia and of its properties throughout Cyprus; La Solie, La Thomasie, La Tremecossie, Le Quit, La Quercherie, Cherin, Lapiton, Melyas, Maratha, Syuorie, Cambi, Xindac, the fief [feodum] of Briem, Asquia, Pigui and Prastroue. He establishes the suffragan bishoprics of Paphos, Limassol and Famagusta. He grants the archbishop the pallium and lists the feasts and other occasions on which it can be worn. He refers to rights of procuration and the processional cross, but dwells on the archbishop’s obligations. He forbids the proprietary possession of graveyards and eclesiastical benefices. He confirms endowments made to them, referring to the place where the hospital is situated, a house in Ascalon [Scalona] with vineyards, Zamzi, houses in Ramla, a house, a vineyard and possessions at Jaffa, the casale of Capharsin, the volta near the Gate of St Nicholas [at Acre], and a house in Tyre. He grants exemption from tithes on noval lands, cultivated by themselves for their use and that of their animals. If a diocesan bishop is not available for episcopal functions, they may find another Latin bishop.They may bury those who wish to be buried in their cemeteries. text: Jan. 2. Lateran. Pope Celestine III writes to the bishops of Paphos, Limassol and Famagusta, and the clergy of the diocese of Nicosia. At the request of King Aimery of Cyprus, he has reformed the church of Cyprus, establishing under papal authority an archbishop and 3 bishops. He commends as papal legates to the island A[lanus], now archbishop of Nicosia, who had been cancellarius regis, and the bishop of Paphos, who had been archdeacon of Latakia. The consecrations were performed by the archbishop of Nazareth and the bishops of Bethlehem and Acre. He sends the pallium, requested by the chapter of Nicosia, through the bishop of Paphos and Leonardus and Radulphus canonici Nicosienses. Jan. 2. Lateran. text: May 8. Lateran. Pope Celestine III writes to the Valaniensis episcopus, who has sought advice from the Holy See. The pope agrees to allow the bishop to wear on his clothes the sign of the cross, according to the custom of the brothers of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem, from whom he was chosen to be bishop, and to swear an oath of security to the Hospitallers relating to an indemnification over the castle of Margatum, but he stresses that this should not create a precedent for the bishop’s successors, unless his predecessors acted similarly with respect to the lords of Margatum. The pope confirms the liberties, immunities and customs of the Valaniensis ecclesia, saving the privileges and all the rights of the bishops and of the brothers of the Hospital of Jerusalem. May 8.
