text: Aug. 3. Ferentino. Pope Honorius III orders the archbishop of Nicosia, Auduinus canonicus Nicosiensis and the cantor of Limassol to investigate a report by I. canonicus Antiochenus that A. canonicus Antiochenus had fraudulently extracted precious stones from a gospel book at Antioch and replaced them with counterfeits.

text: Aug. 13. Lateran. Pope Honorius III informs King John of Jerusalem, the archbishop of Nicosia, the bishops of Acre and Bethlehem, the duke of Austria, the magistri of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem, the Knights Templar and the Hospital of St Mary of the Germans, and all the clergy and laity laying siege to Damietta that he has received their letters and knows how hard is their task. He has exhorted the crusaders at Genoa, Venice and elsewhere in Italy to come quickly to their aid and that he hopes that enough help will reach them.

text: Mar. 23. Lateran. The bishop of Acre has complained to the pope that when the pope had ordered the clergy of the diocese of Acre to respect the bishop’s ordinary jurisdiction, the archbishop of Caesarea, gathering abbots, other clergy and laity together, suspended the bishop in his absence, placed an interdict on the church of Acre and excommunicated the canons, in spite of the fact that an appeal had already been lodged with Cardinal Pelagius of Albano, the papal legate. When Magister Anselmus canonicus Acconensis stated that the archbishop had acted against the statutes of the general council and began to read the pope’s letter to the archbishop, the archbishop had him expelled, tearing his clothes and ripping up the letter. Pope Honorius III orders the archbishop of Nicosia and the bishop of Bethlehem to investigate and, if they find the account is true, to force the archbishop of make satisfaction and reprimand him for his injury to the pope.

text: Dec. 10. Lateran. Following a request from the archbishop of Nicosia, Pope Honorius III allows the archbishop to absolve from travelling to the Holy See those who have used force against clergy, because of the difficulty of the journey, so long as they make satisfaction in the form laid down by the Church and provided that the violence has not been perpetrated against a bishop or abbot and has not led to death or mutilation.

text: Dec. 16. Lateran. Pope Honorius III informs the archbishop of Nicosia that he has heard that many chapels and oratories, some of them without endowments, have been built in his diocese with the result that many people are not attending their parish churches. He orders the archbishop to decide which of these chapels and oratories are superfluous and to close those erected without endowments.

text: Dec. 17. Lateran. Pope Honorius III grants the archbishop of Nicosia the right to wear the pallium on the Feasts of St Thomas the Martyr, the Invention and Exaltation of the Holy Cross, St Michael, St Laurence, St Martin, St Nicholas, the vigils of Christmas and Pentecost, and on other days specified in the privileges of the church of Nicosia.

text: Jan. 5. Lateran. Pope Honorius III writes to the archbishop of Nicosia and the bishops of Paphos and Limassol. Following the visit of Bishop C. of Famagusta [C. Amochostanus episcopus] to Rome to inform the pope of conditions in Cyprus and obtain confirmation of the convention between the Cypriot church and Queen Alice of Cyprus [Oct. 1-31 1220], the pope reports that he has confirmed the agreement. Alice has asked that those Greeks who are not obedient to the Roman church should be allowed to remain in residence. The pope replies that he wishes to favour Greeks who obey the apostolic see and to allow them to retain their customs and rites, but because it would be monstrous and against the constitutions of the general council for a diocese to have several bishops, he has ordered the patriarch of Jerusalem and the archbishops of Tyre and Caesarea to remove these [Greek] bishops, enjoining Greek abbots, priests and deacons in the kingdom of Cyprus to obey the [Latin] bishop established in their diocese. The queen should assist them. Otherwise over time the kingdom might be lost to the Roman church and even to Latin rule. He adds that he is detaining the bishop of Famagusta on business in Rome until 14 September. The diocese should be cared for in the bishop’s absence.

Pope Honorius III assures the archbishop of Nicosia that he cannot be called for trial in regions subject to the count of Tripoli, who persecutes the archbishop because he obeyed the orders of Cardinal Pelagius of Albano, the papal legate, and published the excommunication of the count, unless a specific reference is made to this in a future papal letter.
