text: Aug. 22. Narni. Pope Honorius III recalls for the patriarch of Jerusalem and the archbishops of Caesarea and Nazareth Pope Innocent III’s judgement in relation to Tyre, where the Venetians and their vicarii had been exceeding their rights and extending their parochial demands over all living in their third of the city. Innocent had subjected the Venetian church in Tyre to the archbishop, but Patriarch A. of Jerusalem, the papal legate, had died before putting this into effect. The Venetians had tried to claim that the court of appeal in this instance was the patriarchate of Jerusalem, not the papacy. The pope had asked the patriarch, the archbishop of Caesarea and the abbot of Mt Tabor to enforce the judgement, but with Innocent’s death and the abbot’s replacement, Pope Honorius adds the archbishop of Nazareth to the judge delegates who are ordered to enforce the judgement.

Pope Honorius III informs the king of Jerusalem, the patriarch of Jerusalem, and the magistri of the Knights Templar and the Hospitallers of St John that the king of Hungary, the duke of Austria and other crusaders plan to muster on Cyprus on the Feast of the Nativity of the the Blessed Virgin Mary [8 September]. They should meet and advise them.

text: Jul. 10. Lateran. Pope Honorius III writes to the patriarch of Jerusalem, the bishop of Acre and the cantor Acconensis in relation to the case of magister Willelmus clericus. He had ordered them to investigate whether it was reasonable to instal Willelmus as a canon of the church of Limassol on the basis of the grant to him of an asisie, which is worth a little less than a prebend, arguing that there would little to lose and a benefit to be gained. The patriarch, bishop and cantor had found no reason to oppose the instalment, but had suggested that it be postponed. Believing that the wider church will benefit, Honorius orders them to compel the bishop and chapter of Limassol to instal Willelmus in the choir and in chapter.

Pope Honorius III congratulates the patriarch of Jerusalem, the king of Jerusalem and the magistri of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem, the Knights Templar and the Hospital of St Mary of the Germans on the capture of Damietta and encourages them to respect the decisions of the papal legate.

text: Jan. 3. Lateran. Pope Honorius III writes to the patriarch of Jerusalem and the archbishops of Tyre and Caesarea. 1 Latin metropolitan and 3 suffragan bishops have been established on Cyprus by the legates of the Holy See, but a Greek archbishop and Greek bishops have also been instituted without papal authority and maintain the Greek errors. It would be monstrous and against the constitutions of the general council for a diocese to have several bishops. He orders the patriarch of Jerusalem and the archbishops of Tyre and Caesarea to remove these Greek bishops, enjoining Greek abbots, priests and deacons in the kingdom of Cyprus to obey the Latin bishop established in their diocese, according to the convention made between Queen Alice and the prelates.

The archbishop of Nicosia has personally told the pope that although King Aimery of Cyprus endowed the church of Nicosia with the 2 casalia of Fendias and Ornithia, to be held as Oddo camerarius had held them, a prestia was excluded from the gift because of dispute between the king and the church. The archbishop has asked the pope to help with its restoration. Pope Honorius III orders the patriarch of Jerusalem, the archbishop of Caesarea and Iterus canonicus Antiochenus, who lives in Acre, to investigate and decide on the matter.

The bishop of Famagusta has informed the pope that during the reign of King Aimery of Cyprus the tithes of 3 districts [regiones], Petalas, Constantia and Crotequi, were granted to his church, as is recorded in the privilege of Pope Celestine III. But the archbishop of Nicosia unjustly receives the tithes of the casalia of Melias and Saforia, and of other places in the districts. Pope Honorius III orders the patriarch of Jerusalem, the bishop of Bethlehem and the archdeacon of Acre to investigate and restore the tithes to the archbishop of Famagusta if that is appropriate.

The archbishop of Nicosia, representing himself and his suffragans, has informed the pope of the presence in the Cypriot dioceses of Suriani, Iacobini, Nestorini and others, [327] who are not obedient to the Roman Church. Pope Honorius III orders in one letter the patriarch of Jerusalem, the archbishop of Caesarea and the bishop of Bethehem, and in another the archbishop of Caesarea, the bishop of Acre and P. thesaurarius Cesariensis, to compel these people to subject themselves to their diocesan authorities.

text: Mar. 4. Anagni. Representatives of King John of Jerusalem have explained in the pope’s presence how certain merchants [mercatores] avoided paying dues to the chatena of Acre by intermingling their goods with those carried by privileged clergy. Pope Honorius III orders the patriarch of Jerusalem to enforce an end to this fraudulent behaviour.
