text: Nov. 30. Jaffa. Amalricus comes Ascalonis, with the consent of his brother King Baldwin and the agreement of his mother Queen Melisende, makes a sealed eleemosynary grant to his confratres the canons of the Holy Sepulchre in return for their contribution to the expense of capturing Ascalon. He gives the Holy Sepulchre a casale called Geladia/Geliadia with 16 carrucatę terrę, marked out by his homines, and a house in Ascalon. With the agreement of Patriarch Amalric, he also gives 2 carrucatę terrę in the casale called Baineolbederan in exchange for the mahumeria called by the Sarraceni Cathara and the Latins ‘Green’, which had been given to the Holy Sepulchre after the capture of Ascalon. He confirms the alms-gift to his confratres the canons of 4 carrucatę terrę over [super] the river before Jaffa, a garden before Jaffa, a vineyard next to it and another vineyard, together with whatever the canons hold legitimately in the territories of Ascalon and Jaffa. text: Dec. 25 1160 - Aug. 31 1161. In the presence of Patriarch Amalric, Petrus Tyrensis archiepiscopus, together with his chapter, makes an eleemosynary grant, giving dominus Nicholaus Sancti Sepulcri prior and the convent of the Holy Sepulchre the entire tithe of a casale called Derina, which the canons possess. Any appurtenance of the casale which the canons acquire will be freed from the tithe. Petrus also gives the tithe of an enclosed viridarium between the wall and forewall of Tyre [inter murum et ejus antemurale], with a berquilium. He confirms their possession of the church of St Mary, which was the first cathedral of Tyre, saving the dignity of the mother church. Moved by the urgent necessity of providing for his redemption from captivity by the pagani, Johannes Gothmannus, with the consent of his wife Amandala, his son Ancherius, who has assisted in the matter, Stephania the wife of Ancherius, Helisabeth, the daughter of Iohannes and the wife of Hugo dominus Cesariensis, sells the casalia of Bethaatap, Derhassen, Derxerip, Culi and Vastinam Leonis to the canons of the Holy Sepulchre, free from all servitium, exactio and dominium, for 1400 besants. With the agreement of the king [Baldwin III] and his heirs and relations, Morage Raiz, forced by the need to meet debts to the king, sells the canons of the Holy Sepulchre part [pars] of his house, in which he used to have a mill [molendinum], for 120 besants and 12 modii of grain. The canons bought the house to add to their stationes next door, which they had acquired in an exchange with the Hospital of St John. They will have the right to make improvements, by inserting pillars and vaultings and by closing up doors, windows and water pipes.

Pope Alexander III renews for Nicholaus prior and the canons of the Holy Sepulchre the papal protection granted them by his predecessors Popes Honorius II, Innocent II, Celestine II, Lucius II and Eugenius III and he confirms their possessions, referring specifically to confirmations by the patriarchs of Jerusalem of the grants of half of all oblations to the Holy Sepulchre; oblations to the relic of the True Cross, except on Good Friday and when the patriarch has need of them; the tithes of the city of Jerusalem and lands around, except for those from the funda; and the church of St Peter in Jaffa. He confirms the possessions and rights of the canons of the Holy Sepulchre in the Iberian peninsula [Yspania]. He exempts them from the payment of tithes on noval lands, cultivated by themselves or at their expense, and on animal fodder. He forbids the transfer of brothers from the community without the licence of prior and chapter.

He confirms the grants made by Duke Godfrey, King Baldwin I, Patriarch Arnulf and their successors, specifying the following: in the bishopric of Bethlehem the casale of Thecua, given by King Fulk; the villa of Mahumeria with its church; in the diocese of Caesarea castrum Feniculi; in the city of Jaffa the church of St Peter; the castle [castrum] of Gith; in the city of Tyre the church of Sancta Maria antiqua sedes; in the diocese of Tyre the casale of Sancta Erina; in the diocese of Tripoli the church of the Holy Sepulchre on Mont Pèlerin, the church of Sanctus Georgius in Montanis and the villa called Biuora, given in exchange for Megina; together with properties in southern Italy, Languedoc and Iberia. He confirms the freedom of the canons to elect the patriarch, exempts them from the payment of tithes and first fruits on noval lands, cultivated by them or at their expense, or providing fodder for their animals. He concedes the privilege that in every diocese a house of the canons, containing a community of 4 brothers or more, can have an oratory, while reserving the rights of the local bishop.
