Ansellus gloriosissimi Sepulcri cantor et presbiter writes to Gerbert, bishop of Paris, the archdeacons Stephen and Rainald, the dean Bernier, the precentor Adam and all the chapter of the cathedral of Paris. Although absent for 24 years, he records how he was brought up among them and has never forgotten them. Out of love for them he persuaded dominus W. [Warmund of Picquigny], the patriarch of Jerusalem, and the canons of the Holy Sepulchre to be joined in prayer to Paris. He sends a relic of the True Cross, which had belonged to King David of Georgia and was brought by David’s widow to Jerusalem when, in the pontificate of Patriarch Gibelin, she retired to a Georgian nunnery there. Pope Calixtus II writes to Patriarch Warmund of Jerusalem regarding the cantor [Ansellus] [34] and succentor of the Holy Sepulchre, who, as a result of some dispute, are living like laymen in their houses and are ordering others to replace them in the performance of the Divine Office. He confirms their possessions and the donations made to them: half of all oblations offered to the Holy Sepulchre or the relic of the True Cross; the tithes of the city of Jerusalem and the places nearby, except for the tithes of the funda and the half of a benefice handed by the king to the church of Bethlehem; indeed whatever the late Patriarch Arnulf himself confirmed. Baldwin per dei gratiam rex Iherusalem Latinorum secundus makes a sealed eleemosynary grant, confirming for the church and canons of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem their possession of a casale called Derina, situated near Tyre [in terminis Tyri] close to the great spring [fons] that feeds the aqueduct. The territory of the casale, situated on the hillside, comprises 4 carrucates [tantum terrᶒ, quantum quatuor paria boum poterunt excolere de anno ad annum]. Baldwin excludes from the confirmation another unnamed casale, on which he recognizes the Holy Sepulchre has claims, and a garden [ortus] situated between the sea wall and sea forewall of the city. The canons in return renounce their claim for a rent of 200 besants taken from the revenues [in redditu] of Nablus.
