Pope Paschal II writes [in Pie postulatio voluntatis] to Giraldus, institutor ac prepositus Ierosolimitani xenodochii, taking the hospital [xenodochium], situated in the city of Jerusalem next to the church of St John the Baptist, under papal protection. He confirms all acquisitions that have been and will be made by the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem for the sustenance of pilgrims and the poor, including those gifts made by the patriarchs of Jerusalem and others. The Hospital is freed from the payment of tithes on harvests produced at its labour or expense. On the death of Giraldus only the professed brothers may elect his successor. Paschal confirms the Hospital’s right to all its possessions, in Asia as well as in Europe. He refers particularly to xenodochia sive ptochia at St Gilles, Asti, Pisa, Bari, Otranto, Taranto and Messina, which are to be subject to Giraldus and his successors. Feb. 15. Benevento. He remits the payment of all tithes owed in his diocese to him and his cathedral, the church of the Holy Cross. In return the brothers of the Hospital renounce a dispute they had with the church of the Holy Cross because the chief northern door of the church had been built over a house belonging to them. text: Feb. 5. Robertus de casali S. Egidii and his wife Odula remit 100 of the 500 besants owed them annually by the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem. The remaining 400 will be paid 4 times a year, 100 each on the Feasts of Easter, the Nativity of St John the Baptist, All Saints and Christmas. If payment is not made within 40 days Robert and his heirs can reoccupy the land until the rent is paid. In return for the remission, Raimundus magister and the Hospital have, at the request of Robertus and Odula, purchased the casale of Teira, which is next to Calanson, from Pisellus de casale S. Egidii, his wife Arsen, his sons Dudo/Dudonis and Johannes, and Agnes, the wife of Dudo, for 1,000 besants, with the agreement of Gualterius Maledoctus and his wife Milisendis. Gualterius Maledoctus promises that he will demand no service for the casale from the Hospital, in return for which he receives 400 besants from Robertus de casale S. Egidii. Dudo, the son of Pisellus is made a vassal [homo] of Gualterius, paying each year 250 besants in return for the Hospital’s assurance that it will demand no service from the casale. The casale is then handed to the Hospital and the master of the Hospital takes possession of it. Witnesses: Gualterius Maledoctus; uxor ejus Milessendis; Pisellus de casali S.
