comments: [141] Hiestand (PTJ 2:232) and Mayer (Varia, pp. 43, 95-7) draw attention to the problem of dating, because of the style used in the principality of Antioch. Mayer suggests the alternatives Mar. 24-31 1174 or Mar. 1 – 31 1175. The first of these is unlikely, because it would place the resolution of the dispute between the archbishop of Apamea and the Hospital of St John in the Octave of Easter. It is possible that a synod had been summoned by the patriarch in that week, but one would expect some reference to it and a more substantial list of witnesses. Otherwise the clergy would be far too busy at the time. In 1175 Easter did not fall until 13 April. The date of Mar. 1-31 1175 is, therefore, preferred.
