At Aimery’s request the brothers of the Hospital of St Mary of the Germans give Paulus and his brother 200 besants. With the agreement of her husband dominus Aymarus de Lairon and her son Galterus, Iuliana domina Cesaree makes an eleemosynary grant under her husband’s seal to the Hospital of St Mary of the Germans in Acre. She gives houses [in Caesarea] that had belonged to Georgius Lormina, the volta of Bernardus Falcilla and the gastina situated between these houses and the house of Petrus de Beugrant, by the public way, as far as another public way that runs towards the sea. She gives the turris Mallart with the platea in front, which extends to the border of a gastina belonging to the Templum Domini, and another little tower opposite, in the angle of the eastern city wall. These towers will be requisitioned by the lord of Caesarea if necessary for defence, but will be returned to the brothers in peacetime. She also gives a field [campus] that belonged to domina Brima. This is bordered on the west by a garden of the Hospital [of St John of Jerusalem], on the south by a field [campus] belonging to dominus Aymarus, on the east by a road that seperates it from the field [campus] of dominus Symon, and on the north by a road that separates it from the field [campus] of domina Grossa. She also confirms an eleemosynary grant made by Iohannes Charles, with the agreement of his mother, his brother Helyas, his sister domina Orgoillosa, Iuliana herself, her husband dominus A. and her son. Iohannes Charles has given the Hospital of St Mary of the Germans 2 fields [campi], a garden and a threshing floor [area] which is at the head of one of the fields. One of these fields has on its western side a field [campus] in which is the agullia sancti Petri, while on the east it borders a field [campus] that had belonged to Rainerius de Gibeleth, in which there was a vineyard. On the south it touches a road that separates it from the garden of the archbishop, and on the north there is a road running to Hadaydon. The area is at the head of this field. Iohannes de Ybelino domnus Beriti et regni Ierosolimitani baiulus records how Iohannes Tortus came into his presence, and that of the High Court [regalis curia] and asked of Iohannes de Ybelino and the vassals [homines] of the Lady Maria, regni honorabilis domna, licence to sell his house in Acre to settle his debts. After taking counsel from the vassals of the Lady [Maria], Iohannes de Ybelino judged that the licence could not be granted. On the response of Iohannes Tortus that he would have to sell either his fief [feodum] or his house to pay his debts, the court decided to change its decision and permit Iohannes Tortus to sell his house in order to retain his fief. And so, in the presence of the baiulus Iohannes de Ybelino, who sealed the charter, and of the High Court [regalis curia] and with the agreement of Maria, the wife of Iohannes Tortus, his sister Beatrix and her husband Willelmus de Monliart, Iohannes Tortus sold his house to the Hospital of St Mary of the Germans in Acre for 2700 Saracen besants. The house is bordered on the east by the houses of Mt Tabor and of Beloais, the royal way [via regia] and the houses that belonged to Petrus Bordin, on the west, by the house of Bonefrage filius Sahit, the rua Judeorum, the house of the Jews and the stable [stabulum] of Renerius scriptor, on the north by the house of Maria, the wife of the late priest of the church of St Mary Magdalene, and on the south by the royal way [via regia] and the house held by domna Hauhis of Iohannes Tortus. In return for her agreement to the surrender of this house, the brothers of the Hospital of St Mary have given Hauhis 300 Saracen besants and 2 marchae argenti. text: Jun. 27. Pope Innocent III confirms Pope Celestine III’s privilege to the Hospital of St Mary of the Germans. He confirms papal protection and the Order’s possessions, specifying: the location in which the Hospital is situated; a house in Ascalon with its vineyards; Zanzi; houses in Ramla; a house, vineyards and possessions at Jaffa; a house in Acre; the casale of Cafirsin; a volta near the Gate of St Nicholas [Acre]; a house in Tyre; a house in Caesarea; the casale called Bezal/Besal; the curia sancti Georgii on Cyprus; 2 villae in Armenia called Combedefort and Heion. The Order is exempted from tithes on noval lands. Sacred oils, consecrations and ordinations can be performed by [any] diocesan bishop. The faithful can be buried in the Order’s cemeteries if they so wish, provided they are not excommunicated or under an interdict. The Order will follow the practice of the Knights Templar with regard to clergy and milites and that of the Hospitallers of St John of Jerusalem with respect to the care of the poor and the sick. There is to be no violence permitted in enclosure. The elections of magistri should be free. Jun. 27. text: Sept. 4. Bohemond, dei gratia princeps Anthiochie et comes Tripolis, makes a sealed grant to the Hospital of St Mary of the Germans. He gives a pecia terre, which belongs to him and is situated within the town [burgus] of Tripoli next to the main wall [prope magistrum murum] of the burgus, but he reserves houses built on the land held by him and his homines. The land is bounded on the east by the staircase [gradus] of the great tower of the main wall. It stretches as far as the land of the bishop of Tripoli and from there to the wall of the Temple, which is to the west and adjoins the main wall of the burgus. It ought to be distinguished from Bohemond’s land and the land of Berengerus de Sura, near the boundary of the land of the Temple. Bohemond also gives the Hospital of St Mary of the Germans 3 towers on the stretch of wall between the staircase already mentioned and the land of the commandery [domus] of the Temple, on condition that nothing is built other than houses for its mansio, that if the wall of the burgus is damaged in consequence of its building work, it is bound to repair it, and that the prince and his homines can enter and leave by the posterns in the wall.
