comments: [5] Mayer (UKJ 1:117-18 and in Bistümer, pp. 258-87) has argued at length against any endowment by Godfrey and the establishment by him of a Benedictine community in the Valley of Jehoshaphat. There are reasons – particularly Patriarch Arnulf’s charter of Apr. 6 – Dec. 24 1112 – for questioning the foundation of the Benedictine abbey at such an early date, but the prestigious nature of the shrine and the burial of Garnier of Grez in late July in valle Iosaphat, in porticu basilice sancte Marie virginis et matris Iesu Christi (Albert of Aachen, p. 516) suggests that there was some monastic presence on the site during Godfrey’s lifetime. See Pringle, The Churches 3:288-9.

He founds a confraternity to help finance the reconstruction. He promises the confratres 2 Masses a week at the tomb of the Blessed Virgin Mary, one for the living, the other for the dead. A long list of confratres contains almost entirely the names of individuals residing in Norman southern Italy, the only possible settlers being Willelmus de Buris and Hugo de Puteolis.†Oct. 1 1102 – Dec. 2 1105.
