The son of Sanguineus [Nur ad-Din, son of Zengi] besieged Bellinas with a large army and defeated King B[aldwin III] and the Knights Templar. B[ertrandus] magister and 87 Templar brothers were captured. 300 other milites, who were with them, were killed after capture. Large quantities of horses and arms were lost. King Baldwin, together with T[heodericus] Flandriae comes and Rainaldus de Sancto Walerico, collected an army, counter-attacked and relieved Bellinas. The Templars surprised 230 pagani, who were attending a wedding, and killed or captured them. The pope praises the Templars and encourages the archbishop of Reims to recruit suitable men to go to the aid of the Holy Land or to provide horses and arms. Before Nov. 13. text: June 1-30. Frater Philippus de Plessis, pauperum militię Templi magister humilis, describes for the abbot of Cîteaux events in the Latin East. He with 100 milites spent the period from Martinmas to Pentecost on the marches of the land of Tripoli beween Castrum Album and Haman. Sephedinus with his whole army journeyed from Egypt, Jerusalem and Damascus to beyond the river Euphrates and came to an agreement with his nephew the lord of Aleppo. This threatens the Christian settlers, and peasants [agricolę] have deserted the Templars’ lands and casalia. Bad weather has ruined the crops. An earthquake on 20 May caused great destruction, knocking down a large part of Acre and killing countless people, although the Templar houses were saved. All the towers around Tyre except 3 and the walls; barbacans and houses are wrecked. Most of Tripoli is destroyed, as is the castle of Archados, the foundations of the castrum Arsum and most of the walls of Castrum Album, including the great tower, which the Templars believed to be unrivalled. The city of Tortosa and the Templar castle there were spared. A pestilence followed the earthquake. Philippus asks for the abbot’s prayers, reminding him how the Knights Templar grew from the Cistercian Order. The Templars in the East have received with pleasure frater Artaudus and frater Bernardus de Borth with their companions.June 1-30. text: Oct. 1-31. Frater W. de Carnoto pauper militie Templi magister informs Pope Honorius III of the arrival at Acre of a large number of crusaders [peregrini] from the German empire and elsewhere. They have been joined by the king of Hungary and the dukes of Austria and Moravia. Al-Adil [Sephedinus], the great sultan, is immobile in Egypt, fearing the fleet from Frisia, which is due on the next passage. He has sent his son Coradinus to the frontiers of the Latin settlement. The Muslims are weaker than at any time in many years, but on the Christian side there is a great need of provisions, because the harvests have failed in Palestine and less grain has been imported than expected. There is also a severe shortage of horses. Before the arrival of the king of Hungary and the duke of Austria, the patriarch of Jerusalem, the king, the crusaders [peregrini], the brothers of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem and the Knights Templar had decided to campaign towards Nablus and to engage with Coradinus, but after their arrival the unanimous decision has been made to invade Egypt to besiege Damietta, thus opening a prudent way to the land of Jerusalem. All crusaders [crucesignati] should be prepared to bring with them large quantities of provisions and horses.Oct. 1-31. text: Oct. 3. Acre. In the palacium of dominus Odo conestabulus et bajulus. The record of an agreement reached in the presence of dominus Odo de Montebeliardo, conestabulus regni Hierosolimitani et bajulus ejusdem regni pro domino imperatore between on one side the Knights Templar and the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem and on the other the citizens of Marseille. The lords and viscounts of Marseille - Roncelinus, Hugo, Raimundus de Baucio and Geraldus Ademarii de Montilio and their wives - and Raimundus Gaufridus de Tritis, had granted the Orders the rights to have ships [naves et ligna] in the port of Marseille and to sail to wherever they wish carrying pilgrims and merchants, but the magistri of the Orders complained of extortions and wanted the ships and goods of Marseille [in Acre] to be confiscated until they were repaid an estimated 2000 marchae argenti. Johannes de S. Hylario consul Massiliensium in Accon argued that he had no power to reply to the charges and he appealed for justice from the conestabulus and his court. The magistri of the Orders and the representatives of Marseille, dominus Rostagnus de Podio Alto and dominus Guittelminus de Caranzon, come to an agreement through the mediation of the dominus conestabulus, dominus Johannes de Ybelino dominus Beriti and other prudhommes [proceres]. Rostagnus and Guittelminus, having plenary authority granted in Marseille, allow the Orders the right have 1 ship [navis] each, making use of the port of Marseille twice a year, in the August passage and the Easter or March passage. Each of the two ships can carry up to 1500 pilgrims or merchants. The Orders can make use of additional ships for their own needs, but these cannot carry pilgrims or merchants. The magistri promise not to embark pilgrims or merchants in the ports from Collioure to Monaco. Frater Hermannus de Peragors magister domus militie Templi, frater Gerinus magister domus Hospitalis sancti Johannis, Rostagnus and Guittelminus attach their seals, as does Odo de Montebiliardo. text: Jul. 25. Acre. Frater A. magister domus milicie Templi, together with his brothers, comes to an agreement with frater G. magister domus Hospitalis sancti Johannis Jerosolimitani and his brothers over the waters and mills of the flumen Acconensis, which flows down from the fons Recordane. The Knights Templar can retain the water above their mill, so that the water level can rise to a mark on the mill of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem. If it rises above that mark, they must take action, but cannot be held to blame when there is rain or a flood. The Hospitallers of St John promise not to dam the river to the injury of the Templars. Both Orders have the right to sail, load and unload boats [barchae], bound for Acre, as far as the barrage at the Templar mill. The Hospitallers can have boats both above and below the barrage, but will be liable for any damage done to it by them. Neither Order should do anything to impede the passage of boats. The Knights Templar can raise the river banks to the height of the mark on the Hospitaller mill. Both Orders have had this record written and sealed, and have asked H. Nazarenus archiepiscopus, R. Acconensis episcopus and O. comestabalus regni Jerosolimitani to confirm it with their seals.Jul. 25. Acre.
