text: Oct 1 1102 – Mar. 24 1103. In the reign of Baldwin, rex inclitus et christianissimus regnum Babiloniᶒ atque Asiᶒ disponens, Evremar, who has succeeded to the patriarchate, rules on the prebends of the canons of the church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. Each canon is to be provided with 150 besants a year. This sum will be received by the cantor, the primicherius or magister scholasticus, the treasurer and sacristan, over and above any other prebend customarily enjoyed by them. King Baldwin has provided the succentor with 150 besants and after the death of Arnulfus archidiaconus, who has been funding the subdeacon with 100 besants a year, the patriarch will provide the same sum for the subdeacon. The patriarch gives the canons 2 altars – the high altar in the choir by which is the patriarchal cathedra, and the parochial altar, immediately behind the Tomb [ad capud Sepulcri], although the church ornaments on the altars will remain the property of the church. All offerings made during Mass, even when celebrated by the patriarch or another bishop, will be enjoyed by the canons. This gift does not apply to offerings made outside the church of the Holy Sepulchre. The patriarch also gives the canons the church of St Peter Major at Jaffa, together with its cemetery and all customs belonging to the metropolitan church. The patriarch grants the canons the privilege of translating clergy to benefices in churches in the kingdom of Jerusalem. Oct 1 1102 – Mar. 24 1103. Baldwin per dei gratiam rex Iherusalem Latinorum secundus makes a sealed eleemosynary grant, confirming for the church and canons of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem their possession of a casale called Derina, situated near Tyre [in terminis Tyri] close to the great spring [fons] that feeds the aqueduct. The territory of the casale, situated on the hillside, comprises 4 carrucates [tantum terrᶒ, quantum quatuor paria boum poterunt excolere de anno ad annum]. Baldwin excludes from the confirmation another unnamed casale, on which he recognizes the Holy Sepulchre has claims, and a garden [ortus] situated between the sea wall and sea forewall of the city. text: Jun. 25. Mabilia, a consoror of the church of the Holy Sepulchre, makes an eleemosynary grant, giving the canons of the Holy Sepulchre [dominis meis] her garden. She also leaves them her house on her death. The canons compensate her with 170 besants. They have built a wall round the garden and have spent 40 besants building a cistern there. They also give her for her lifetime a daily allowance of a loaf, half a litra of wine and a salver of cooked food, together with a piece of meat and the same drink as the canons on Sundays and Solemnities. text: 1130 – Aug. 31 1133. Bernardus Bituricensis and his wife Ahoys make an eleemosynary grant to the canons and church of the Holy Sepulchre. They give their house and whatever else they have, including a piece of land near the gate of St Stephen in Jerusalem, which they acquired in return for the payment of a census of 2 besants. They will remain in possession of the house and their other property for their lives. After their deaths a third part of the property is to pass to the canons, although if one of them survives a further third part can pass to the canons in return for support for the rest of the survivor’s life. A third part will go to their daughter and her heirs, if she marries, although it can be exchanged with the canons for 100 besants and if she dies childless it will also pass to the canons. Petrus prior Sancti Sepulchri takes Bernardus and Ahoys into confraternity, in recognition of which Bernardus and Ahoys will give the the church a justa of wine and 2 loaves three times a year: at Christmas, Easter and on the 15 July [Festum Jherusalem]. With the advice and consent of Patriarch William and Petrus prior, the canons have chosen Rainaldus, one of themselves, to be prior of Sancta Quarantena. He is to remain a canon of the Holy Sepulchre and will be subject to the prior and canons there. His successors will be appointed by the canons of the Holy Sepulchre. Rainaldus has the right to enlarge the priory and increase the size of the community at Sancta Quarantena. The deed is confirmed and sealed by Patriarch William. She has been made a consoror of the Holy Sepulchre. She gives the canons a rent of 12 besants or 120 rotula of oil a year on condition that they commemorate the obit of her husband Hugo Ebriacus each year on 5 October. In the presence of Patriarch William of Jerusalem, who seals the charter, Riso, capellanus to Bohemond I and Bohemond II of Antioch, gives the canons of the Holy Sepulchre his houses with an apple orchard [pomerium], which he had bought from Willelmus medicus for 64 besants. They are to hold it under the same terms as he held it from Bohemond II. The houses are situated next to those of Pontius Antiocheni thesaurarius on the other side of the public way [via publica]. Riso reserves for himself one camera, to provide a small living place [habitaculum] for his servus, whom he has had baptized, for as long as he lives and serves him faithfully.
