He gives in feudum 300 Saracen besants, to be paid annually from the revenues of the Gate of David in 4 instalments: on the Feast of St John the Baptist, the Feast of St Remigius, Christmas and Easter. He gives 2 casalia in the territory of Nablus called Saffir and Kafarhone with their villani; 3 vineyards on the mountain called Abel, the first having a waterless cistern, the second including a cava made up of chalk [terra candida], and the third nearby; 24 modii of wheat, 24 modii of barley and 6 modii of vegetables, to be collected annually at the Gate of David at harvest time; 2 roddae of sugar de mazara from all the sugar cane plantations at Nablus, and every week 1 cudaria of sugar de mazara for every pertica of cultivated sugar cane for the sick Zaribel. He also gives freedom [franchisia] to enter and leave, buy and sell throughout the kingdom of Jerusalem and freedom from all jurisdiction [and dues]. If the rents outlined above cannot be paid, the balance will be made up from all royal revenues in or outside Jerusalem and Acre. Guy, per dei gratiam in sancta civitate Ierusalem Latinorum rex VIIIus, his wife the Lady Queen Sibylla make a sealed eleemosynary grant to the Hospital of St Mary of the Germans, represented by magister Sibrandus, who founded this hospital during the siege of Acre. They give a house in Acre which had been a hospice for Armenians and patrones, [230] out of which can be established a hospital. If the gift of the house proves to be impossible, Guy and Sibylla will give the platea next door, where a hospital can be built. They also give 4 carrucate terre in the territory of Acre. With the agreement of his wife domna Ysabella regis Amalrici filia, Aimery, per dei gratiam rex Ierusalem nonus et rex Cipri, records under seal that he has sold the Hospital of St Mary of the Germans a casale in the region of Acre called Aguille with its villani and gastinae for 3000 Saracen besants. He adds the following gifts: the right to take a rotula of sugar each day from the sugar press [masarium] in his casale called Fiergio for the needs of the sick in the hospital; in Casale Vmberti and his other casalia in the region of Acre the right to take each year 1 clicha of wheat and 1 clicha of barley from every worked carruca, to be provided by the rustici; 5 carrublae paid by the rustici for every 100 goats wintering in Aimery’s land, and 2 out of the 10 carrublae which Aimery levies for every 10 goats; 3 karrublae provided by the rustici for every carrucata owing Aimery 2 besants. Aimery confirms the eleemosynary gifts and old freedom [francisia] granted to the hospital in Cyprus by King Amalric. With the agreement of his wife the Lady Queen Isabella, the daughter of the late King Amalric, Aimery, dei gratia rex Ierusalem nonus et rex Cipri, makes a sealed eleemosynary grant to the Hospital of St Mary of the Germans. He gives the tower over the Gate of St Nicholas at Acre, but the brothers are to have no rights over the Gate, which is an entrance to the city, nor can they make new exactions or dispose of the tower by gift, sale or pledge. If their Order is absorbed into another, they must surrender the tower to the crown, and they must also surrender it if the needs of war or other necessity demand, although it will be returned to them once the crisis is over. Aimery, dei gratia rex Ierusalem nonus et rex Cipri, records that Paulus and his brother, the sons of Theodericus de Sarepta, came into his presence and that of his curia and also of the curia of his iurati, and renounced their claims to a house with a garden in Tyre, which the brothers of the Hospital of St Mary of the Germans had been given in a charter by comes Henricus and his wife domna Isabella, regis Amalrici filia. At Aimery’s request the brothers of the Hospital of St Mary of the Germans give Paulus and his brother 200 besants. With the agreement of his wife the Lady Queen Isabella, Aimery confirms under seal the brothers and the sick of St Mary of the Germans in possession of the house and garden. text: Jun. 27. Pope Innocent III confirms Pope Celestine III’s privilege to the Hospital of St Mary of the Germans. He confirms papal protection and the Order’s possessions, specifying: the location in which the Hospital is situated; a house in Ascalon with its vineyards; Zanzi; houses in Ramla; a house, vineyards and possessions at Jaffa; a house in Acre; the casale of Cafirsin; a volta near the Gate of St Nicholas [Acre]; a house in Tyre; a house in Caesarea; the casale called Bezal/Besal; the curia sancti Georgii on Cyprus; 2 villae in Armenia called Combedefort and Heion. The Order is exempted from tithes on noval lands. Sacred oils, consecrations and ordinations can be performed by [any] diocesan bishop. The faithful can be buried in the Order’s cemeteries if they so wish, provided they are not excommunicated or under an interdict. The Order will follow the practice of the Knights Templar with regard to clergy and milites and that of the Hospitallers of St John of Jerusalem with respect to the care of the poor and the sick. There is to be no violence permitted in enclosure. The elections of magistri should be free. Jun. 27. text: Sept. 4. Bohemond, dei gratia princeps Anthiochie et comes Tripolis, makes a sealed grant to the Hospital of St Mary of the Germans. He gives a pecia terre, which belongs to him and is situated within the town [burgus] of Tripoli next to the main wall [prope magistrum murum] of the burgus, but he reserves houses built on the land held by him and his homines. The land is bounded on the east by the staircase [gradus] of the great tower of the main wall. It stretches as far as the land of the bishop of Tripoli and from there to the wall of the Temple, which is to the west and adjoins the main wall of the burgus. It ought to be distinguished from Bohemond’s land and the land of Berengerus de Sura, near the boundary of the land of the Temple. Bohemond also gives the Hospital of St Mary of the Germans 3 towers on the stretch of wall between the staircase already mentioned and the land of the commandery [domus] of the Temple, on condition that nothing is built other than houses for its mansio, that if the wall of the burgus is damaged in consequence of its building work, it is bound to repair it, and that the prince and his homines can enter and leave by the posterns in the wall. Leon, dei et Romani imperii II gracia rex Armenie, filius Stephani de potenti et magnifico genere Rupinorum, records under seal that out of love for the Roman empire, by the authority of which he has been made king, he has made an eleemosynary grant to the Hospital of St Mary of the Germans, of which he is a confrater. (1). He has given the castellum called Amudain and the casale situated below it. The boundary of its lands stretch on one side from Simonaglam as far as the old water-trough [ad aquarium], where there are 2 willow trees and where there has now been created a lake; and then as far as a rocky platform [rostrum de rocha media] next to a gastina that is in the territory of Adidy, and then rising as far as Quilli, which the Latins call Meta de Gammassa. The boundary of the lands between Gammassa and Amudayn stretches to a cava, where there is a tree called chaisne spinosa, the abbacia of Chalot and the vineyard [agger vinee] of Mechale, as far as the road. The boundary on the other side stretches between meadows [pastores; for pasturae] and Amidain as far as a hill, before which are 2 red bushes [rubi salvatici] and a mulberry tree [arbor morarius]. Then it runs as far as the gastina called Dagie and to Zamga, and from there as far as the lacus Helia and Ioh, between which and Rama is a cava. (2). He gives a casale called Sespin, the lands of which are marked out and extend on the side of Baari as far as a cross, and from there to a cava and to the hill [turon] of Sabuhe and the mound [agger] of Bezequi. Between Sespin, Baari, Abedi et Raselain the boundary is marked by a black stone and a fox hole [pertusus vulpis] and extends as far as the curba of Iohannes Turcus; from there it goes to the curba of Moqun and to Indapus, below which the casale of Sespin is situated. On the side of Alasines, the boundary extends to a forked mulberry tree [arbor morarius furcata] and to the river of Iohan, the vineyard of Dendieu, the church of Indapus, a flat topped hill [ad turonum platum), a black stone and a ruined vault [arvoltus], a lake, by which was the house of Iohannes Cordin, and the cross roads where there is a stone cross - this is the road that leads directly from Amudain to Tractic - and then to the river. (3). He gives a casale called Buquequia, adjoining the territory of Sespin, with its marked boundaries, just as dominus Michael held it. (4) He gives a casale called Cumbethfor in the territory of Melonum, the bounds of which, marked by stones resting on charcoal [mete petrarum fixe at subter carbones], stretch on the east along the road as far as a stone placed between Cumbethfor and Tetimec; it then extends, marked in the same way, alongside Vancun. On the western side, marked similarly, it stretches between Cumbethfor and the casale called Beleguinos, which is inhabited by villani from Arench and belongs to sancta Maria de turri; and then as far as a marble column. On the north, marked in the same way, it goes towards Casseria and a turon, and on the south, marked in the same way, as far as the boundary marks of Bagnigun, where a cross is placed, and to a rock; a boundary marked in the same way lies between Abraainain and Casseria and in the middle of the boundary stones is a stone cross. (5). He gives a casale called Ayun. The division with Calasie is marked by a stone cross and charcoals along the road that leads to Vancun. On the western side the land stretches to the fox hole, where there is a stone cross; then, marked by 5 stones with charcoals beneath, it extends as far as a sheepfold and alongside Vangun as far as another stone cross established next to a gastina above the road, at the head of which is another stone, where the road forks. These properties are given, according to the laws of the Franks [secundum legem et consuetudinem Francorum] with the rights to import, sell and buy everything, including horses needed by the Order and freedom from the payment of dues [dricture et exactio] and servicium to anyone.
