Pope Alexander III renews for Nicholaus prior and the canons of the Holy Sepulchre the papal protection granted them by his predecessors Popes Honorius II, Innocent II, Celestine II, Lucius II and Eugenius III and he confirms their possessions, referring specifically to confirmations by the patriarchs of Jerusalem of the grants of half of all oblations to the Holy Sepulchre; oblations to the relic of the True Cross, except on Good Friday and when the patriarch has need of them; the tithes of the city of Jerusalem and lands around, except for those from the funda; and the church of St Peter in Jaffa. He confirms the possessions and rights of the canons of the Holy Sepulchre in the Iberian peninsula [Yspania]. He exempts them from the payment of tithes on noval lands, cultivated by themselves or at their expense, and on animal fodder. He forbids the transfer of brothers from the community without the licence of prior and chapter. Oct 6. Sens.
