text: Sept. 11. Antioch. Bohemond [of Taranto], Count Raymond [of St Gilles], Duke Godfrey [of Bouillon] of Lorraine, Count Robert of Normandy, Count Robert of Flanders and Count Eustace of Boulogne write to Pope Urban II. They inform him of their triumphs as Hierosolymitani Iesu Christi against the Turci, their capture of Nicaea, their victories at Dorylaeum [in valle Dorotillae] and over armies of relief during their siege of Antioch, their seizure of Antioch on 3 June, their investment by a great Muslim army, the discovery of the relic of the Holy Lance, their victory over the Muslims in the battle of Antioch on 28 June, and the death of the papal legate, the bishop of Le Puy, on 1 August. They call on Pope Urban, as the initiator of the crusade, to come out himself and complete what he had begun, occupy St Peter’s original cathedral, eradicate heresies [Graeci, Armeni, Syri, Jacobitae] and lead the crusaders to Jerusalem. In an afterword, apparently dictated by Bohemond, complaints are made about those who have taken the cross and have not fulfilled their vows and about the false promises of the Byzantine emperor Alexius.
