Pope Honorius III confirms for the archbishop of Nicosia and the bishops of Paphos, Limassol and Famagusta the ruling by Cardinal Pelagius of Albano, the papal legate, and the magistri of the Knights Templar and the Hospitallers of St John on the agreement between Queen Alice, her son and heir Henry and the barones, milites and homines of the kingdom of Cyprus and the church of Cyprus. He repeats Cardinal Pelagius’s letter of 14 September 1222.

text: Nov. 28. Lateran. Pope Honorius III assures the archbishop of Nicosia that he cannot be called for trial in regions subject to the count of Tripoli, who persecutes the archbishop because he obeyed the orders of Cardinal Pelagius of Albano, the papal legate, and published the excommunication of the count, unless a specific reference is made to this in a future papal letter.

text: Aug. 11. Rieti. The archbishop of Nicosia has informed Pope Honorius III that the queen of Cyprus intends to marry Boamundus, the son of Count Bohemond of Tripoli, in spite of the fact that this is prohibited on the grounds of consanguinity. The pope leaves it to the archbishop, as the queen’s diocesan, to investigate and enforce canon law.

text: Feb. 25. Lateran. Pope Honorius III informs the archbishop of Nicosia, the bishop of Limassol and the cantor Nicosiensis that he has taken the king of Cyprus under his protection. He orders them to prevent the king being harmed by anyone until he comes of age.

text: Mar. 5. Lateran. Pope Honorius III informs the archbishop of Nicosia that the queen of Cyprus and B., the son of the count of Tripoli, have appealed to the pope against his decision on the illegitimacy of their marriage, made on the basis that their affinity is in the 4th degree of consanguinity, whereas in fact it is in the 5th. Emissaries of the emperor Frederick have interceded with him on their behalf. The pope exonerates the archbishop and releases him from the case, assigning it to the patriarch of Jerusalem and bishop of Acre.

Pope Gregory IX writes to the archbishop of Nicosia, the patriarch of Jerusalem and the bishop of Acre, confirming the decision of his predecessor to transfer the investigation of the case of the marriage of the queen of Cyprus and B., the son of the count of Tripoli, who had appealed to the Holy See, from the archbishop to the patriarch and the bishop of Acre.

text: Mar. 5. Lateran. The archbishop of Nicosia has asked for the pope’s decisions on two issues. First, B. filius domini Beritinsis has secretly married E., the daughter of the late G. de Monte Beliardo and the widow of G. de Monte Acuto, in spite of [a general ruling, including the threat] of excommunication made by Cardinal Pelagius of Albano, the papal legate, because they are within the prohibited degrees of consanguinity. They have caused scandal, have ignored their excommunication in the expectation of a papal dispensation and have forced the archbishop to flee from Cyprus to Acre. Secondly, some Greek [Greci] monks, have denied the efficacy of the Latin Eucharist on the grounds that the sacrament can only be performed with leavened bread, and have publicly proclaimed other errors. They have been imprisoned but refuse to recant unless authorized to do so by their own patriarch. Pope Gregory IX orders the archbishop to proclaim the excommunication of the couple publicly, invoking against them the secular arm if need be, and to proceed against the Greek monks for heresy.

text: Jul. 14. Rieti. The bishop of Limassol has informed Pope Gregory IX that in the churches of Cyprus there is very little for treasurers [thesaurarii] to do and has asked that when a vacancy occurs a treasurer, who enjoys 1 and a half prebends, should be replaced by 2 canons, who would each have a full prebend, thus increasing the number of those serving the church. The pope orders the archbishop of Nicosia to authorize this, provided the chapter of the church of Limassol agrees.

At the request of the bishop of Limassol, Pope Greory IX informs the archbishop of Nicosia that when his church and those of his suffragans have more than enough funds they may enlarge their canonical prebends by 25 per cent.
