text: Sept. 24. Lateran. Responding to a complaint by G. Montis Beliardi regni Ierosolimitani comestabulus, who had been baiulus of the kingdom of Cyprus, that when King Hugh of Cyprus came of age he expelled G. from the kingdom without the judgement of his court and confiscated his land, Pope Innocent III orders the patriarch of Jerusalem, the papal legate, to restore G.’s rights.

Pope Gregory IX has heard that the baptism of slaves is being refused in the Latin East, because it is said that many pretend to want to be converted to Christianity and, having gained their liberty, abscond. He demands the patriarch of Jerusalem, the papal legate, all the prelates in Syria, the magister and brothers of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem, the magister and brothers of the Knights Templar and the preceptor and brothers of the Hospital of St Mary of the Germans to allow slaves who sincerely desire to convert to Christianity to be baptised.

text: Jan. 6. Lateran. In an internal dispute in the Cistercian abbey of Jubin, in the diocese of Antioch, the prior and his accomplices, using milites and armed men, attacked the supprior and his supporters, wounding over 30 monks and conversi and expelling them from the monastery and its granges. The Cistercian general chapter could not intervene. The pope called on the assistance of the archbishop of Apamea [archiepiscopus Appamiensis] the decanus…. and magister Henricus, canonicus Antiochensis, while the abbates of La Ferté, the mother house of Jubin, and Jubin came into the papal presence and asked for intervention. Pope Gregory IX orders the patriarch of Jerusalem, the papal legate, the archbishop of Nazareth and the archidiaconus Acconensis to proceed against the monks.

Hearing that through greed many lords in the kingdom of Jerusalem forbid their slaves and other Sarraceni to hear sermons or receive baptism, Pope Gregory IX orders the patriarch of Jerusalem, the papal legate, and his suffragans to compel the lords to allow their slaves hear sermons at least once a month and on the great feasts and to receive baptism, although they will remain in servitude.
