comments: [14] William of Tyre (pp. 486-7) wrote that the king promised the Genoese a third part of the revenues and the right to a vicus with full jursidiction in every city they helped conquer. A subject of debate is whether the promise was made or whether William had seen a Genoese forgery.

Baldwin, rex Iudee et Ierusalem ac defensor sanctissimi Sepulcri domini nostri Ihesu Christi, gives the church of St Laurence of Genoa plateae in Jerusalem and Jaffa; a third part of Asur/Arciuf and Caesarea, with a third part of their territories, which extend for a league, together with a casale in each; a third part of Acre, with a third part of the city territory which extends for a league; 300 besants a year in exchange for other casalia; a third part of every city and its territory which the Genoese help to take with 50 or more soldiers, together with a casale; and a third part of Old Cairo [Babilon] with three of the better casalia of their choice. Baldwin swears never to harm or imprison Genoese, who will pay no commercium; neither will merchants from Savona, Noli or Albenga or the family of Gandulfus Pisanus filius Fiopie/Tropię. Baldwin renounces rights on the goods of Genoese who die in his dominions and on shipwreck. text: Mar 25? - Aug. Tancred, Dei gratia Antiochenus princeps/dux et princeps Antiochenus qui tunc orientali, Deo favente, dominabitur regioni, comes to an agreement with the Pisans. They will help him take Latakia from the Greeks, who have unjustly seized that city by force. If God grants him Latakia he promises the Pisans free occupation of a vicus called the Voltae Prodromi, which runs in one direction as far as [the church of] St Nicholas and in the other to the seashore and Iron Well [puteus ferreus]. He allows their ships [naves et galeae] to visit the port of Latakia. The Pisans can enter and leave whenever they wish without paying any dues or customs. He also gives the Pisans the vicus Sancti Salvatoris in the city of Antioch and general freedom throughout all his land and ports. The agreement is confirmed by: B. Antiochiae patriarcha; R. archiepiscopus Tarsensis; R. archiepiscopus Mamistensis; T., sancti Pauli abbas; and by the following barones: R. Fulconis filius; Engellerius; R. Sancti Laudi. Pope Paschal II confirms for Hvgo abbas and the abbey of St Mary of the Valley of Jehoshaphat all the gifts made by Godfrey [dux] and Baldwin [Ierosolimitanus rex] and others, and whatever the abbey will receive through the concessions of pontiffs, the liberality of princes and the oblations of the faithful. It will pay no tithes on the products of its own labour. It is free of episcopal procurations in Jerusalem. It can enjoy revenues from infidel peasants [rustici infideles]. Anyone can be buried in its cemetery. It can receive alms on behalf of those who die. It can enjoy parochial rights in its parishes. It can have relations with excommunicates. Pope Paschal II writes [in Pie postulatio voluntatis] to Giraldus, institutor ac prepositus Ierosolimitani xenodochii, taking the hospital [xenodochium], situated in the city of Jerusalem next to the church of St John the Baptist, under papal protection. He confirms all acquisitions that have been and will be made by the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem for the sustenance of pilgrims and the poor, including those gifts made by the patriarchs of Jerusalem and others. The Hospital is freed from the payment of tithes on harvests produced at its labour or expense. On the death of Giraldus only the professed brothers may elect his successor. Paschal confirms the Hospital’s right to all its possessions, in Asia as well as in Europe. He refers particularly to xenodochia sive ptochia at St Gilles, Asti, Pisa, Bari, Otranto, Taranto and Messina, which are to be subject to Giraldus and his successors. Feb. 15. Benevento.
