text: Mar. 29. Lateran. In the letter Omne datum optimum Pope Innocent II praises the Knights Templar, who are constituted by the Church as defenders. He grants them and Robertus magister religiose militie Templi a general privilege. He extends papal protection to them, confirming their possessions and their professed life, laying down that their master must always be a brother knight elected by their chapter. He exempts them from the payment of tithes on the fruits of their own labour or on produce destined for their own use. He permits them to have their own priests and clerics and to discipline them. The Templars may make use of any Latin bishop for consecrations and ordinations if the local diocesan is unwilling. They can construct oratories and cemeteries in deserted places. They can bury their own dead in times of interdict and their alms-collectors are exempt from interdicts. Benefactors enjoy indulgences. Mar. 29. Lateran. If they commit a crime in the prince’s domains they will be subject to Venetian law and judgement. Petrus Dominici Sepulcri prior records that when an inhabitant of Mahumeria, a woman called Odierda, became a consoror of the Holy Sepulchre, she gave the community a vineyard. When she died her son Andreas held on to it for a long time against the canons’ will. Robertus Nazarenus archiepiscopus, Fulcherius Tyrensis archiepiscopus, Bernardus Sydoniensis episcopus, Rorgo Ptolomaidensis episcopus, Helias of Tiberiadensis episcopus, Rogerius Ramathensis episcopus and others judged that the fruits of the vineyard should be enjoyed by the canons, but the canons, moved by charity, have remitted the fruits to Andreas and have conceded the vineyard to him for life on condition that they receive a third of the harvest and the tithe, and the vineyard itself on his death. text: Feb. 5. Robertus de casali S. Egidii and his wife Odula remit 100 of the 500 besants owed them annually by the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem. The remaining 400 will be paid 4 times a year, 100 each on the Feasts of Easter, the Nativity of St John the Baptist, All Saints and Christmas. If payment is not made within 40 days Robert and his heirs can reoccupy the land until the rent is paid. In return for the remission, Raimundus magister and the Hospital have, at the request of Robertus and Odula, purchased the casale of Teira, which is next to Calanson, from Pisellus de casale S. Egidii, his wife Arsen, his sons Dudo/Dudonis and Johannes, and Agnes, the wife of Dudo, for 1,000 besants, with the agreement of Gualterius Maledoctus and his wife Milisendis. Gualterius Maledoctus promises that he will demand no service for the casale from the Hospital, in return for which he receives 400 besants from Robertus de casale S. Egidii. Dudo, the son of Pisellus is made a vassal [homo] of Gualterius, paying each year 250 besants in return for the Hospital’s assurance that it will demand no service from the casale.
