[125] Bohemond III, the son of Prince Raymond, Dei gratia princeps Antiochenus, with the agreement of his wife domina Orgollosa principissa, confirms under seal for the church of St Mary, the archbishop, consuls, senators and members of the commune of Pisa and its province residing in his principality land to build a house in the port of Latakia. This land extends below the church of St Elyas, before the house of the Templars [domus Templi] and the house of magister Ugo, as far as the sea, and along the seashore as far as a tannery [taneria] and the old wall, and in the upper part as far as the ditch. If the Pisans by the judgement of court [iudicium curie] can recover the land in the port occupied by Hugo Embriacus, the son of Willelmus, the land now given will revert to the prince. Bohemond gives in addition a house in the city of Antioch that belonged to dominus Odo de Tyro. He assures the Pisans of the security of their persons and goods in case of shipwreck and of the property of those who should die, except when they are intestate. He remits half of all taxes [medietas totius iuris] customarily paid on entry and departure, coming and returning, buying and selling, throughout his territory and he assures them of his protection. Disputes between them can be settled in their own court [curia], but if a case cannot be decided, or involves theft, predation, homicide or the subjects of Antioch, it will decided in the prince’s court. Raymond III Tripolis comes, son of Count Raymond II and Hodierna comitissa, makes a sealed eleemosynary grant in return for the aid given by Josbertus Hospitalis Iherusalem magister, frater Arnaudus Lombardus and other brothers of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem in securing his release from captivity and the help they have always given him. He confirms all the gifts made by his predecessors and his father Count Raymond II. He adds to them the surrender of the half of all spoil taken from the Sarraceni, which attached to his father’s standard [vexillum] and which his father had retained. This right of ‘vexillum’ is to be enjoyed by the Hospitallers. Out of sympathy for Bishop R. and the canons there he makes a sealed eleemosynary grant, giving them an annual rent of 60 librae of Provins, to be drawn from the revenues of Troyes, and a house in that city which the canons can occupy. He frees the canons from the payment of dues. text: Nov. 23. Tusculum. Pope Alexander III confirms and adds to the privileges and confirmation made to Rodericus magister domus sancte Marie Montis Gaudii de Jerusalem and his professed brothers. He takes the Order of Montjoie under papal protection and approves the Rule of a Military Order. [167] He confirms the following possessions: the locus [on] Mons Gaudii where the house of the Order is situated, outside the walls of Jerusalem; Tuanasaba given by King Baldwin III, the Turris Puellarum with 3 other towers and a garden adjacent in the city of Ascalon; 100 besants [aurei] drawn annually from the funda of Ascalon; Palmaria given by Guido de Scandalione; 300 besants [aurei] drawn annually from the logia in Acre where bread is sold; 400 besants [aurei] drawn annually from the Gate of David [in Jerusalem]; a house of Carroblerius; and properties in Lombardy and Iberia. The Order is permitted to build oratories in remote places, although with some powers allowed to bishops. It is exempted from much episcopal jurisdiction, although its churches should be subject to local bishops. It is freed from the payment of tithes and first fruits on lands cultivated by the brothers themselves or providing animal fodder or on newly established churches and villae in deserted places.
